Overview of NSS-Self Financing Unit (SFU) unit of the Institute

The National Service Scheme – Self Financing Unit (NSS-SFU) of B.P. Poddar Institute of Management and Technology was started in the year 2016 to establish a meaningful linkage between the campus and the community. Since then programmes have been organized to create awareness on various public issues. At present Dr. K. Prabakaran, Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities is functioning as the Program Officer/Convener of NSS unit consisting of more than 100 volunteers. A student enrolled as NSS volunteer will have to put in 240 hours for community work in a year for a period of two years. He/she is likely to participate in different programmes and projects under NSS.

The NSS scheme is aimed at developing the overall personality of the students through service to the community and thereby emerge them as responsible individuals encompassing the virtues of life. Since inception has been a vibrant and active unit rendering service to the society and functioning as a regular feature in the realm of our education. It is a student–centered programme in which projects are implemented to render service in close collaboration with the community and thereby it provides vast scope for the students’ interaction with the people. While interacting with the community the students learn many things and apply their practical knowledge for the upliftment of the community. Students through the NSS activities are engaged in actual work not only within the Institute campus but also their services extend to neighbouring schools and slums.

The aim of NSS is to develop a sense of service, team spirit and dignity of labour. The various programmes conducted by the NSS have brought about a remarkable change in their outlook and their attitude towards life and society. Programmes are also conducted once a week in the college campus through out the academic year giving importance to cleaning the premises, gardening, conservation of energy & water etc. Orientation classes are conducted to discuss different topics. Issues like unemployment problem, urbanization, challenges in higher education, Eco awareness, traffic awareness, information technology, human rights, etc. are the primary focus.
